R-E-A-D-I-N-G

Over the last month or two, I've been slowly starting the process of teaching Shaan to read. It started very gradually (i.e. working on recognizing his name, pointing out the word "STOP" on stop signs, etc.) and now I'm using flashcards and pointing out words he knows in books when I read to him. I realized today that he's reading 21 words now, so we're really starting to make some progress. He can read the following words: STOP, SLOW, CAT, DOG, EYES, HAPPY, EASTER, NOSE, NO, SHAAN, JUJU (what he calls my mom), HAHA (what he calls my sister), MOMMY, DADDY, TOYS, BOYS, TEETH, ZOO, CAR, BALL, and HI. I've tried to make an effort to spell out the words, i.e. "D-O-G, DOG" when we look at the flashcards and I noticed in the car yesterday that I could spell out a word and he knew what it was. So, not only has he memorized the "sight" of the word, but he has actually memorized the spelling as well (meaning he doesn't have to "see" the word to know what it is). I was really pleasantly surprised by that - I didn't know that he could recognize by spelling alone - it's amazing how much kids can pick up when you don't even realize it!

He also knows the phonics of the letters - a couple of great videos I've used to help with the phonics are "Letter Factory" by Leap Frog and the MonkiSee Memoflix Volume 2 "Whole Word Phonics ABC's." If you have kids who are starting to learn their phonics or starting to learn to read, I highly recommend the below (FYI "Letter Factory" can be found at Toys R Us or Amazon.com and the Monkisee products are available at www.monkisee.com):
